PAUREE 33 (Stanza 33)
In this Pauri, Guru Nanak Dev ji says that everything happens under His Hukum (Order, Will), we have no power to make things happen our way. We have no control on birth and death. Mental peace, spiritual knowledge, contentment etc. cannot be achieved by our own efforts. These come by His Grace. Those who relinquish their ego and remember Him with true love in their hearts receive His grace.

mangan: to ask, den: to give

JOR NA JEEVAN MARAN NA JOR

surtee: spiritual awakening, giaan: spiritual knowledge, veechaar: spiritual thinking

JOR NA JUGTEE CHHUTAE SANSAAR

We have no power to escape from worldly temptations using certain techniques (enjoying the comforts of life with spiritual discipline and a sense of detachment - to stay above the worldly temptations- is a gift that can be obtained only through His Grace).

jugtee: technique, plan, chhutae: to escape, sansaar: world, implies worldly temptations

JIS HATH JOR KAR VEKHAE SOE

NANAK UTTAM NEECH NA KOE II33II

Nanak says, nobody is superior or inferior (we have no power to become superior or inferior by our own efforts, only God has that power, for example being rich or poor, intelligent or ignorant, beautiful or ugly is not in our hands – it is all By His Hukam or Will. The same thing is said in the second Pauri where Guruji says “Hukmee Uttam Neech”, which means some are superior, some inferior by His Will,)

uttam: superior, neech: inferior, na koe: nobody

This is a good opportunity to memorize Gurbani, one Pauri at a time. You can concentrate better and enjoy more if you recite bani without looking at the gutka.

ONE SPIRIT, DIFFERENT BODIES

After Guru Nanak Dev ji, none of the Gurus used their names in their writings. They always used the name "Nanak" as if everything was written by Guru Nanak Dev ji. This reinforces our belief that all our Gurus had the same spirit in different bodies. The eternal source of spiritual knowledge that was within Guru Nanak Dev ji was passed on to each Guru and they uttered Gurbani that originated from the same source.)
