PAUREE 36 (Stanza 36)

In this Pauri, Guru Nanak Dev ji describes the third stage of spiritual development (Saram Khand or stage of spiritual effort). With the recognition of purpose and duty in Dharam Khand and realization of the vastness of God’s Creation in Giaan Khand, a person works hard to ascend further into this stage where the mind and soul become pure and beautiful and the person becomes pious like an angel.

GIAAN KHAND MEH GIAAN PARCHAND, TITHAE NAAD BINOD KOD ANAND

TAA KIAA GALAA KATHIA NA JAHE, JE KO KAHAE PICHHAE PACHHUTAE

The beauty of those souls (their state of enlightenment) cannot be described, if someone tries (to describe), he will only regret it later.

taa kiaa: of those, galaa: tales, experiences, kathia: to describe, je ko: if someone, kahae: describes, pichhae:pachutae: repents, regrets later,

TITHAE GHARIAE SURAT MAT MAN BUDH,

tithae: there, ghariae: is made, is molded, surat: conscience, mat: mind, man: soul, budh: intellect

TITHAE GHARIAE SURAA SIDHAA KI SUDH II36II

There (in this stage), a person molds himself to such an elevated spiritual level that his enlightened state compares to that of angels and persons with divine powers.

suraa: angels, sidhaa: people with divine powers, sudh: intellect, understanding

This is a good opportunity to memorize Gurbani, one Pauri at a time. You can concentrate better and enjoy more if you recite bani without looking at the gutka.

ONE SPIRIT, DIFFERENT BODIES

After Guru Nanak Dev ji, none of the Gurus used their names in their writings. They always used the name "Nanak" as if everything was written by Guru Nanak Dev ji. This reinforces our belief that all our Gurus had the same spirit in different bodies. The eternal source of spiritual knowledge that was within Guru Nanak Dev ji was passed on to each Guru and they uttered Gurbani that originated from the same source.)
