PAURI 20 (Stanza 20)
In this Pauri, Guruji describes the importance of spiritual ‘cleaning’ of mind. Evil thoughts and deeds are like dirt being accumulated on our minds. This can be ‘cleaned’ by remembering God with love and devotion (i.e. by Simran).
 
BHARIAE HATH PAER TAN DEH PAANI DHOTAE UTRAS KHEH
When hands, feet, and body become soiled, they can be washed with water.
bhariae: filled with, hath: hand, paer: feet, tan: body, deh: body, Paani: water, dhotae: washed, utras: removed, kheh: dirt.
 
MOOT PALEETEE KAPPARH HOE DEH SAABOON LAEEAE OH DHOE
When clothes become dirty with filth, you need soap to clean them.
moot: urine or filth, paleetee: become polluted or dirty, kapparh: clothes, deh saboon: with soap, laeeae oh dhoe: those are washed or cleaned
 
BHARIYE MAT PAAPAA KAE SANG OH DHOPAE NAAVAE KAE RANG

When the mind becomes polluted by evil thoughts and deeds, it is cleaned by meditating on God’s Name with love and devotion.

As human beings, we encounter evils such as kaam (lust), krodh (anger), lobh (greed), moh (selfish love), ahankaar (ego) on a daily basis. These are like dirt being accumulated on our minds. This needs to be ‘washed’ daily, by remembering God with love and devotion (i.e. doing Simran) and good deeds. If a person does not ‘wash’ it and the ‘dirt’ keeps on accumulating, then just ‘water’ is not enough to clean it. Then, Guru ji says, you need ‘soap’, which means more time on Simran, doing Sewa, helping the less fortunate, and developing the habits of forgiveness, humbleness, calmness, contentment etc.
The importance of spiritual ‘cleaning’ mentioned above is further emphasized in the verses below, when Guru ji says that these evil thoughts and deeds, if not ‘cleaned’, become embedded in our soul as sanskaars (attributes or traits). Our body dies, but the soul carries those sanskaars to the next life and to the whole cycle of birth and death.

bhariye: becomes filled, mat: mind, paapaa: sins, kae sang: with, oh dhopae: that is washed, naavae: by God’s Name, rang: color.
Literal meaning will be "when mind becomes filled with sins, it is cleaned with the color of God's Name, or by becoming immersed in God's Name i.e. remembering God with deep love and devotion".
 
PUNNEE PAAPEE AAKHAN NAAHE KAR KAR KARNAA LIKH LAE JAAHO
Virtuous or sinner are not just names, we become virtuous or sinner according to our deeds and we carry these sanskaars (attributes , traits) with us to the next life.
punnee: virtuous, paapi: sinner, aakhan: name or word, naahe: are not, kar kar karnaa: an account of one’s deeds, likh: written, lae jaaho: take with you - implies take with you after death.
Literal meaning will be "you will take a written account of your deeds with you".
 
AAPE BEEJ AAPE HEE KHAAHO
We reap what we sow, implies that rewards and punishments are according to our deeds.
aape beej: what we sow ourselves, aape hee khaaho: we eat - we get, means "we reap what we sow"
 
NANAK HUKMEE AAVHO JAAHO II20II
Nanak says, we come and depart from this world by His Order. This implies that according to our deeds, we remain entangled in the cycle of birth and death under the Divine law.
hukmee: by His order or His will, aavho: come, jaaho: go

This is a good opportunity to memorize Gurbani, one Pauri at a time. You can concentrate better and enjoy more if you recite bani without looking at the gutka.

Evening: Rehras Saheb and Ardas.

JAPJI SAHEB

o Written by Guru Nanak Dev Ji
o This is the first bani in Guru Granth Saheb, also called Adi Granth.
o This bani is not assigned to any Raga (most of the bani in Guru Granth Saheb is in various Ragas)
o Consists of mool mantra, 38 paurees, and a slok.
o This bani is recited in the morning before starting the daily routine.

JAAP SAHEB

o Written by Guru Gobind Singh ji
o This bani is not in the Adi Granth (Guru Granth Saheb ji). It is in Dasam Granth, which is a separate Granth (holy book) containing writings of Guru Gobind Singh ji only.
o This bani has 199 verses, which are written on the first ten pages of Dasam Granth.
o This bani is recited in the morning, before starting the daily routine, after Japji Saheb.

TEN SWAYYAS

o Written by Guru Gobind Singh ji
o This bani is not in the Adi Granth (Guru Granth Saheb ji). It is in Dasam Granth.
o This bani has 10 verses, four lines each.
o This bani is recited in the morning, before starting the daily routine, after Jaap Saheb.

REHRAS SAHEB

o A collection of nine hymns, four of which are written by Guru Nanak Dev ji, three by Guru Ram Das ji, and two by Guru Arjan Dev ji. These hymns follow Japji Saheb in the Adi Granth.
o Also includes Chopyee Saheb, one swayya, and one dohera by Guru Gobind Singh ji, six paurees of Anand Saheb (first five + the last) written by Guru Amar Das ji, and two hymns by Guru Arjan Dev ji.
o This bani is recited in the evening at sunset.

KIRTAN SOHELA

o A collection of five hymns, first three by Guru Nanak Dev ji, fourth by Guru Ram Das ji, and the last hymn is written by Guru Arjan Dev ji.
o All five hymns are from Adi Granth - Guru Granth Saheb ji.
o This bani is recited immediately before going to bed at night and also at funerals
