SLOKE (Verse)

This last sloke (verse) contains the essence of whole Japji Saheb. Guru Nanak Dev ji says that the world is like a theater, where we all are actors playing our roles assigned by God. Our performance is being closely watched by Him. According to our deeds, some get closer to God and some stray away from Him and keep on wandering in the cycles of birth and death. Those who work hard in seeking spiritual advancement and remember Him with love and devotion, achieve the ultimate goal of human life – becoming one with God.

 
PAVAN GURU PAANI PITAA, MAATAA DHARAT MAHAT

Air is the guru, water is the father, and earth is the great mother (Air is essential for body like spiritual guidance is for the soul. Earth is the mother of the whole world, it provides the bounties that we consume everyday. Water is the father, we cannot live without it and it helps mother earth to produce the bounties that we consume).

DIVAS RAAT DOE DAAEE DAAIA, KHELAE SAGAL JAGAT

Days and nights are like male and female nurses in whose lap the whole world is playing ( the whole world is like a theater where we all are actors. God has provided the medium of days and nights for us to play our roles assigned by Him).

CHANGIAIAA BURIAIAA VAACHAE DHARAM HADOOR

Our good and bad deeds are being watched by the Divine judge

KARMI AAPO AAPNI KE NERAE KE DOOR

According to our deeds, some of us will get closer to God and some will stray further away from Him. (Those, who remain absorbed only in worldly possessions (Maya), they cannot get closer to God and keep on wandering in the cycles of birth and death. Those who work hard in seeking spiritual advancement become deserving of His Grace)

JINEE NAAM DHIAAIA GAE MASKAT GHAAL

Those who meditated on His Name, departed from this world achieving success for their hard work (good deeds can get you closer to God, but to achieve the ultimate goal of becoming one with God, one must meditate on His Name with love, devotion, and total surrender).

NANAK TE MUKH UJLE KETEE CHHUTEE NAAL

Nanak says, their faces are radiant with success and many get liberated with them (those who meditated on His Name achieved the ultimate goal of becoming one with God themselves, and showed this path of salvation to many others, who also worked hard and were liberated from the cycle of birth and death).

This is a good opportunity to memorize Gurbani, one Pauri at a time. You can concentrate better and enjoy more if you recite bani without looking at the gutka.

NITNEM BANIS

According to the current Rehat Maryada published by the Shiromani Gurdwara Prabandhak Committee (SGPC), every Sikh is expected to recite the following banis everyday:

Morning: Japji Saheb, Jaap Saheb, Ten Swayyas. Ardas is performed after reciting these banis.

Evening: Rehras Saheb and Ardas.

Night: Kirtan Sohela

JAPJI SAHEB

o Written by Guru Nanak Dev Ji
o This is the first bani in Guru Granth Saheb, also called Adi Granth.
o This bani is not assigned to any Raga (most of the bani in Guru Granth Saheb is in various Ragas)
o Consists of mool mantra, 38 paurees, and a slok.
o This bani is recited in the morning before starting the daily routine.

JAAP SAHEB

o Written by Guru Gobind Singh ji
o This bani is not in the Adi Granth (Guru Granth Saheb ji). It is in Dasam Granth, which is a separate Granth (holy book) containing writings of Guru Gobind Singh ji only.
o This bani has 199 verses, which are written on the first ten pages of Dasam Granth.
o This bani is recited in the morning, before starting the daily routine, after Japji Saheb.

TEN SWAYYAS

o Written by Guru Gobind Singh ji
o This bani is not in the Adi Granth (Guru Granth Saheb ji). It is in Dasam Granth.
o This bani has 10 verses, four lines each.
o This bani is recited in the morning, before starting the daily routine, after Jaap Saheb.

REHRAS SAHEB

o A collection of nine hymns, four of which are written by Guru Nanak Dev ji, three by Guru Ram Das ji, and two by Guru Arjan Dev ji. These hymns follow Japji Saheb in the Adi Granth.
o Also includes Chopyee Saheb, one swayya, and one dohera by Guru Gobind Singh ji, six paurees of Anand Saheb (first five + the last) written by Guru Amar Das ji, and two hymns by Guru Arjan Dev ji.
o This bani is recited in the evening at sunset.

KIRTAN SOHELA

o A collection of five hymns, first three by Guru Nanak Dev ji, fourth by Guru Ram Das ji, and the last hymn is written by Guru Arjan Dev ji.
o All five hymns are from Adi Granth - Guru Granth Saheb ji.
o This bani is recited immediately before going to bed at night and also at funerals
