RAAG GAUREE POORBEE MEHLA 4 (CHAUTHA)

This shabad is written by the fourth guru, Guru Ram Das ji, in Raga named “Gauree Poorbee”
In this shabad, Guru Ram Das ji says that the human body is full of vices and desires for worldly possessions. These can be destroyed only by surrendering your ego and following the Guru’s teachings. Those who remain full of ego, suffer at every step in their life like a person suffers while walking with a thorn piercing in his foot, till that thorn is taken out.


KAAM KARODH NAGAR BAHO BHARI-AA, MIL SAADHOO KHANDAL KHANDAA HEY.

This human body is filled with the vices of anger and sexual desires, these vices can be destroyed only by meeting the true Guru (following the teachings of the true Guru).

kaam: lust, krodh: anger, nagar: city, implies human body, baho: much, bhariaa: filled, mil: by meeting, sadhu: person who has control on his desires, refers to the true Guru, khandal khanda: broken in pieces, destroyed,

 

POORAB LIKHAT LIKHE GUR PAA-I-AA, MAN HAR LIV MANDAL MANDAA HEY.

A person meets the true Guru as a result of good deeds done in the past (life), then the person’s mind remains completely in-tune with God’ Name (His remembrance)

poorab: in the past, likhat: writings, implies deeds, likhe: written, man: mind, har: God, liv: in tune, meditation, mandal manda: completely engrossed

 

KAR SAADHOO ANJULEE, PUN VADAA HEY, 
KAR DANDAUT PUN VADAA HEY. II RAHAA-O II

Therefore, pray with folded hands before the Guru, this is the most virtuous thing to do. 
Bow in front of the true Guru (surrender your ego), that is the best thing to do.

anjulee: pray with folded hands, pun: virtuous deed, vadaa: big, great,  dandaut : bow down

 

SAAKAT HAR RAS SAAD NA JAANI-AA, TIN ANTAR HAUMAI KANDAA HEY.

The faithless (who does not remember God) does not know the taste of the Divine bliss that is experienced by meditating on God’s Name, because he has ego embedded in his heart like a thorn (embedded in one’s feet).

saakat: faithless, har: God, ras: essence, implies bliss, saad: taste, na jaaniaa: don’t know, tin: they, antar: inside, haumai: ego, kandaa: thorne

JI-O JI-O CHALEH CHUBHAI DUKH PAAVEH, JAMKAAL SAHEH SIR DANDAA HEY.

The more he (the faithless) behaves with ego, the more he suffers, like a person who suffers while walking with a thorn piercing in his foot, and the fear of death always looms on his head like a big stick.

Jio: as, chaleh: walks, jam: messenger of death, implies fear of death, kaal: death, saheh: tolerates, experiences, sir: head, dandaa: big stick, club

HAR JAN HAR HAR NAAM SAMAANE, DUKH JANAM MARAN BHAV KHANDAA HEY.

(On the other hand), God loving people remain absorbed in His Name and they become free from the pain of going through the cycles of birth and death.

har jan: sevants of God, samaane: absorbed, janam maran: birth and death, bhav: world, khanda: broken into pieces, implies freed from.

ABINAASEE PURAKH PAAYAA PARMESAR, BAHO SOBH KHAND BREHMANDAA HEY.

They realize the Indestructible, Supreme Creator, God, and their fame spreads in the whole world and the universe.

abinaasee: indestructible, purakh: personality, paayaa: obtained, realized, paramesar: the Supreme Creator, God, baho: much, sobh: fame, khand: world, brehmandaa: universe.

HAM GAREEB MASKEEN PRABH TERE, HAR RAAKH RAAKH VAD VADAA HEY.

O Waheguru ji, we are poor and meek, but still Yours, You are the greatest of the great, please protect us, protect us (from these dangerous vices)

ham: we, gareeb: poor, maskeen: beggar, meek, prabh: God, raakh: protect, vad: great, vad vadaa: greatest of the great.

JAN NAANAK NAAM ADHAAR TEK HAI, HAR NAAME HEE SUKH MANDAA HEY.

Waheguru ji, Your Divine Name is the only nourishment, the only support, to Your servant Nanak, only by remaining attached to Your Divine Name I experience the true happiness (spiritual bliss).>

Jan: servant, adhaar: sustenance, nourishment,tek: support, har name hee: only by God’s Name, sukh: happiness, implies spiritual bliss, manda: enjoy, experience

This is a good opportunity to memorize Gurbani, one Pauri at a time. You can concentrate better and enjoy more if you recite bani without looking at the gutka.
