RAAG GAUREE POORBEE, MEHLA 5

This shabad is written by the fifth guru, Guru Arjan Dev ji in Raga named “Gauree Poorbee”.
In this shabad, Guru Arjan Dev ji reminds us that this human life is precious, this is the only opportunity given to us by God to lead a righteous life and meditate on God’s Name so that we can be freed from the cycle of birth and death. The time remaining to live in this world is diminishing every day, therefore, make this life a success by following the Guru’s teachings before it is too late.

 

KARAO-n BENANTEE SUNHO MERE MEETAA, SANT TAHAL KEE BELAA.

Listen my friends, this is my humble request to you, this human life is the only opportunity to (meditate on God’s Name by) following Guru’s teachings (because only Guru can attach you to God’s Name).

EEHAA KHAAT CHALHO HAR LAAHAA, AAGAI BASAN SUHELAA.

This human life is the opportunity to earn the wealth of God’s Name, so that you will be comfortable when you go to God’s court (where your deeds will be examined).

eehaa: here, implies during this life,khaat: earn, chalho: go,har: God, implies God’s Name, laahaa: profit, implies wealth,aagai: after, implies after this life, basan: live, suhelaa: easy, comfortable  

 

AODH GHATAI DINAS RAINAARE, MAN GUR MIL KAAJ SAVAAREY. II RAHAA-O II

The age (remaining time to live) is diminishing every day, O my mind, make this life a success by following the Guru’s teachings (before it is too late).

Aodh: age, ghatai: reduces, dinas: day, rainaare: night, man: mind, gur mil: by meeting the Guru, implies following Guru’s teachings, kaaj: undertaking, implies this life, savaarey: successful.

 

EH SANSAAR BIKAAR SANSEY MEH, TARI-O BRAHM GI-AANEE.

This world is full of vices and distrust, only a spiritually elevated person, who has the knowledge about the Creator, can remain untouched by these vices.

Eh:this, sansaar: world, bikaar: vices, sansey: suspition, distrust, tario: swim out of, implies remain unaffected, brahm: the Creator, God, giaanee: knowledgeable.

JISEH JAGAA-EY PEE-AAVAI EH RAS, AKATH KATHAA TIN JAANEE.

Only those who are (spiritually) awakened by Him and on whom He bestows the gift of meditating on His Name realize the taste (of bliss) that cannot be described, can only be experienced.

Jiseh: to those, jagaaey: awakens, implies spiritually enlightens, peeaavai: gives to drink, implies bestows the gift of, eh ras: this taste, implies taste of meditating on His Name, akath: indescribable, katha: description, tin: those, jaanee: came to know, realize.

JAA KA-O AA-EY SO-EE BIHAAJHAU, HAR GUR TE MANEH BASERAA.

O, my friends, do the trade for what you have come (to this world - trade in God’s virtues -give up your vices and acquire His virtues by meditating on His Name). His Divine Name can dwell in your heart only by the blessing of the Guru.

jaa kao: for what, aaey: came, soee: that, bihaajhau: purchase, trade in, har: God, implies God’s virtues, Gur te: by the Guru, maneh: in the heart, baseraa: reside, dwell.

NIJ GHAR MAHAL PAAVOH SUKH SEHJE, BAHUR NA HOEGO FERAA.

(by surrendering to the Guru and immersing yourself in God’s Name), you will experience a state of tranquility and spiritual bliss, then you will find God within yourself and will become free from the cycle of birth and death.

Nij ghar: in your home, implies within yourself, mehal: mansion, implies God’s abode, sukh: happiness, implies spiritual bliss, seheje: by mental poise, tranquility, bahur: again, hoego: will happen, feraa: returning, implies returning to the cycle of birth and death

ANTARJAAMEE PURAKH BIDHAATE, SARDHAA MAN KEE POOREY.

(My friends, pray like this) O all knowing, Supreme Creator, Waheguru ji, grant this wish to me

Antarjaamee: who knows within your heart, all knowing, purakh: supreme personality, bidhaate: creator, sardhaa: wish, man ki : of my heart, poore: fulfil,

NAANAK DAAS IHAI SUKH MAA-N-GAI, MO KAO KAR SANTAN KEE DHOOREY.

that I may serve the saints without ego (so that I can remain immersed in God’s Name in their company), Waheguru ji, this is the only happiness Your servant Nanak asks for.

Daas: servant, maa-n-gai: asks, begs, mo ko: to me, kar: make, santan: saints, spiritually elevated people, dhoorey: dust, sanan ki dhoorey: dust of saint’s feet, implies without ego, signifies extreme humbleness.

This is a good opportunity to memorize Gurbani, one Pauri at a time. You can concentrate better and enjoy more if you recite bani without looking at the gutka.
