RAAG GAURI DEEPKI MEHLA PEHLA

This shabad is written in raga named “Gauree Deepki”. Mehla 1 (to be pronounced as "Mehla Pehla") means this shabad is written by the first Guru, Guru Nanak Dev ji.
In this shabad, Guru Nanak Dev ji describes the soul as a bride going to her husband, God’s home. Guruji says, everyone has to depart from this world, the day and time of departure is already fixed. This is not a time for remorse but is a time to rejoice, because the bride (soul) is finally going to meet her beloved husband (God). Therefore, let us sing His praises and contemplate on His virtues so that we can become worthy of His acceptance.

 

IK-ONKAAR SATGUR PRASAAD

(I pray for the) blessings of the true Guru and the Supreme Creator.

ik: one, onkaar is a combination of two words, oam and kaar, oam means Supreme, kaar means consistent or unchanging, onkaar means Supreme Being that is not subject to change, God, satgur: true Guru, prasaad: blessing.

 

JAI GHAR KEERAT AAKHEE-AI, KARTEY KA HO-EY BEECHAARO

In the company of the God loving people (sangat), where God is remembered and His virtues are contemplated.

Jai ghar: that home, implies ‘that company of God loving people or sangat’, keerat: praises, aakhee-ai: are said, karte ka: of the Creator, beechaaro: thinking, contemplation.

 

TIT GHAR GAAVHO SOHILAA, SIVROH SIRJANHAARO

In that sangat (company), let us sing the song of His praises and meditate on our Creator’s Name.

Tit: that, sohila: song of praises, also means wedding song, sung by the relatives and friends of the bride, giving blessings and good wishes at the time of bride’s departure to the husband’s home, here it implies song of union of the soul (bride) with the Divine Husband (God), sivroh: remember, meditate on, sirjanharo: maker, creator (God)

 

TUM GAAVHO MERE NIRBHAO KAA SOHILAA, HAU VAAREE JIT SOHILAI SADAA SUKH HO-EY. RAHAA-O

My friends, sing the song of praises of my fearless Master (God), I surrender my life to that Master, by singing whose praises, one remains forever blissful.

Nirbhao: without fear, hau: I, vaaree: sacrifice, implies surrender or dedicate, sadaa: always, forever, sukh: happiness, implies spiritual bliss.

NIT NIT JEE-A-RAY SAMAALEE-AN DEKHAIGA DEVANHAAR.

That Great Giver, who has been taking care of all His creation day after day, will also look after you.

Nit nit: day after day, jee-a-ray: living beings, samalee-an: takes care, provides, dekhaiga: will look after, devanhaar: giver, provider, God.

TERE DAANAI KEEMAT NAA PAVAI, TIS DAATAY KAVAN SUMAAR.

You cannot put a value on His gifts (His gifts are priceless), who can count the blessings of that Great Giver?

Tere: by you, daanai: of donations, implies of gifts, keemat: value, daanai keemat: value of His gifts, na pavai: cannot put, tis daatay: that giver, kavan: who, sumaar: count.

SAMBAT SAAHAA LIKHI-AA, MIL KAR PAAVHO TEL.

The day and year (of my departure from this world) has already been fixed. O my friends, prepare me for my departure to my beloved Master’s home by singing the songs of His praises.

Sambat: year, saha: day of wedding, the day when the bride will go to her husband’s home, implies departure from this world, likhi-aa: written, implies fixed, mil kar: together, paavoh: put, tel: oil, paavoh tel: put oil, it is an Indian tradition that before the wedding, brides relatives and friends get together for a ceremony where they prepare the bride for the wedding, put oil in her head, and sing wedding songs and wish her happiness in her husband’s home.

DEHO SAJAN ASEESAREE-AA, JI-O HOVAI SAAHIB SI-O MEL.

My dear friends, give me your blessings and pray that I am accepted by my beloved Master (God).

Deho: give, sajan: dear friend, aseesaree-aa: blessings, ji-o: so that, hovai: happens, sahib: master, mel: meeting, sahib si-o mel: meeting with the Master, implies accepted by my beloved Master (God).

GHAR GHAR EHO PAHUCHA, SAD-RAY NIT PAVANN

(Look my friends), the intimations of the date and time of (departure from this world) are being sent to every home, every day people are being called (every day people die).

ghar ghar: every home, eho: this, pahucha: intimation of wedding date, time etc., implies summons to depart from this world, or death, sadray: calls, nit: every day, pavann: happening.

SADANHAARAA SIMREE-AI , NAANAK SE DEH AAVANN.

Always remember the Great Master (God), because, Nanak says, your days of departure are also coming (everyone has to die one day. Therefore, we must start preparing ourselves by meditating on God’s Name with love and devotion).

Sadanhara: sender of the summons, God, simreeai: remember, meditate on, se: those, deh: days, aavann: are coming.

This is a good opportunity to memorize Gurbani, one Pauri at a time. You can concentrate better and enjoy more if you recite bani without looking at the gutka.

According to the current Rehat Maryada published by the Shiromani Gurdwara Prabandhak Committee (SGPC), every Sikh is expected to recite the following banis everyday:

Evening: Rehras Saheb and Ardas.

JAPJI SAHEB

o Written by Guru Nanak Dev Ji
o This is the first bani in Guru Granth Saheb, also called Adi Granth.
o This bani is not assigned to any Raga (most of the bani in Guru Granth Saheb is in various Ragas)
o Consists of mool mantra, 38 paurees, and a slok.
o This bani is recited in the morning before starting the daily routine.

JAAP SAHEB

o Written by Guru Gobind Singh ji
o This bani is not in the Adi Granth (Guru Granth Saheb ji). It is in Dasam Granth, which is a separate Granth (holy book) containing writings of Guru Gobind Singh ji only.
o This bani has 199 verses, which are written on the first ten pages of Dasam Granth.
o This bani is recited in the morning, before starting the daily routine, after Japji Saheb.

TEN SWAYYAS

o Written by Guru Gobind Singh ji
o This bani is not in the Adi Granth (Guru Granth Saheb ji). It is in Dasam Granth.
o This bani has 10 verses, four lines each.
o This bani is recited in the morning, before starting the daily routine, after Jaap Saheb.

REHRAS SAHEB

o A collection of nine hymns, four of which are written by Guru Nanak Dev ji, three by Guru Ram Das ji, and two by Guru Arjan Dev ji. These hymns follow Japji Saheb in the Adi Granth.
o Also includes Chopyee Saheb, one swayya, and one dohera by Guru Gobind Singh ji, six paurees of Anand Saheb (first five + the last) written by Guru Amar Das ji, and two hymns by Guru Arjan Dev ji.
o This bani is recited in the evening at sunset.

KIRTAN SOHELA

o A collection of five hymns, first three by Guru Nanak Dev ji, fourth by Guru Ram Das ji, and the last hymn is written by Guru Arjan Dev ji.
o All five hymns are from Adi Granth - Guru Granth Saheb ji.
o This bani is recited immediately before going to bed at night and also at funerals
