PAURI 19(Stanza 19)
As in the previous Paurees, each line in this Pauree starts with word ASANKH, which means countless or infinite. In this Pauri, Guru Nanak Dev ji says that God’s creation is so vast that no words are adequate to describe it, still it is necessary to use words to remember Him and to describe His attributes.
ASANKH NAAV ASANKH THAAV
There are countless places with countless names in His creation.
naav: names, thaav: places.
AGAMM AGAMM ASANKH LO
There are countless worlds that are unreachable and beyond imagination
agamm agamm: unreachable, beyond imagination, lo: regions or worlds.
ASANKH KAHAE SIR BHAAR HOE
(God’s creation is beyond human imagination), calling it just ‘countless’ will be a gross understatement.
asankh kahae: by saying countless, sir bhaar hoe: will carry load (of sins) on your head i.e. countless is not an adequate word to describe His creation, it is a gross understatement, like an insult to God.
AKHREE NAAM AKHREE SAALAAH
We have to use words to remember His Name, and to sing His praises. (i.e. although there are no words to describe Him, it is necessary to use “words” to remember Him and to describe His attributes).
akhree: by words, saalaah: praises.
AKHREE GYAN GEET GUN GAH
Only by ‘words’ we can gain spiritual knowledge, sing His praises, and remember His qualities
gyan: knowledge, geet: song, gun: qualities, gah: to become familiar i.e. remember.
AKHREE LIKHAN BOLAN BAAN
The written and spoken language can only be expressed using “words”
likhan: written, bolan: spoken, baan: language.
AKHRAA SIR SANJOG VIKHAAN
Only through “words” one’s destiny can be explained.
akhraa sir : only by words, sanjog: destiny, vikhaan: explained.
JIN EH LIKHE TIS SIR NAAHE
He, who has written everybody’s destiny, is beyond destiny
jin eh likhe: one who has written these destinies, i.e. God, tis sir naahe: has no destiny written on His forehead i.e. God has written everybody’s destiny, but nobody has the power to write His destiny.
JIV FURMAAHE TIV TIV PAAHE
We continue to get according to what is destined for us by Him
jiv furmaahe: as (He) orders, implies as He destines for us, tiv tiv paahe: so we continue to receive.
JETAA KEETAA TETAA NAAO
Whatever He has created, is His manifestation (i.e. He Himself is present in it)
jetaa: whatever, keetaa: created. tetaa: that, Naao: His Name, implies His manifestation.
VIN NAAVAE NAAHEE KO THAAO KUDRAT KAVAN KAHAA VEECHAAR
There is no place where He is not present.
vin naavae: without His Name, thaao: place, naahee ko thaao: there is no place.
KUDRAT KAVAN KAHAA VEECHAAR
How can I comprehend and describe His creation ? (i.e. I am powerless to describe the wonders of God’s creation)
kudrat: nature, or God’s Creation, kavan kahaa: how can I describe?, veechaar: think about or comprehend
VAARIAA NA JAAVAA EK VAAR
I have nothing to offer that befits His Greatness, not even my life.
vaariaa: sacrifice, ek vaar: one time.
Literal meaning will be “I cannot sacrifice even once i.e.I am so small that sacrificing even my life on Him is not an offering worthy of His Greatness” (See more detailed explanation in Pauri 16).
JO TUD BHAAVAE SAAEE BHALEE KAAR
Whatever pleases You is the best for all
Tud: to You, i.e. to God, bhaavae: pleases, bhalee kaar: best thing.
TU SADAA SALAAMAT NIRANKAAR II19II
You, the Formless (God), alone are everlasting.
sadaa salamat: always secure, implies everlasting, Nirankaar: formless.
This is a good opportunity to memorize Gurbani, one Pauri at a time. You can concentrate better and enjoy more if you recite bani without looking at the gutka.

DID YOU KNOW
ONE SPIRIT, DIFFERENT BODIES
After Guru Nanak Dev ji, none of the Gurus used their names in their writings. They always used the name “Nanak” as if everything was written by Guru Nanak Dev ji. This reinforces our belief that all our Gurus had the same spirit in different bodies. The eternal source of spiritual knowledge that was within Guru Nanak Dev ji was passed on to each Guru and they uttered Gurbani that originated from the same source.)
