PAUREE 32 (Stanza 32)

In this Pauri, Guru Nanak Dev ji says that remembering God with true love and devotion and without ego is the way to get closer to God. Union with God can only be obtained by His Grace. Those who try to imitate by mechanically repeating God’s name without love and devotion, falsely boast to enhance their ego.

IKDU JIBHAU LAKH HOHE, LAKH HOVEH LAKH VEES

If one tongue becomes thousands and even twenty times more

ikdu: from one, jibhau: tongue, lakh: hundred thousands, vees: twenty

LAKH LAKH GERA AAKHIEH, EK NAAM JAGDEES

repeat God’s Name thousands of times with each tongue (implies totally immersing in God’s Name in meditation)

gera: times, aakhieh: say, utter, Jagdees: master of the world, God

ET RAAHE PAT PAVRIAA, CHARIAE HOE IKEES

These are the steps (meditating on God’s Name with true love and devotion) that lead towards God, and by ascending on these steps, a person becomes one with God.

et: this, raahe: way, pat: master, God, pavriaa: steps, chariae: by ascending, ikees: one with God, hoe ikees: becomes one with God

SUN GALAA AAKAAS KI, KEETAA AAI REES

Those who try to imitate (by mechanically repeating God’s name thousands of times without love and devotion) are like lowly worm trying to reach the skies.

sun: by hearing, gala: tales, aakaas: sky, keetaa: worms, rees: to copy, to imitate

NANAK NADRI PAAIAE, KURI KURAE THHEES II32II

Nanak says, union with God can only be obtained by His Grace, those who claim otherwise are liars boasting to enhance their ego.

nadri: by His Grace, paaiae: can be obtained, kuri: false, kurae: of a liar, thhees: boasting, false praise

This is a good opportunity to memorize Gurbani, one Pauri at a time. You can concentrate better and enjoy more if you recite bani without looking at the gutka.

DID YOU KNOW
ONE SPIRIT, DIFFERENT BODIES

After Guru Nanak Dev ji, none of the Gurus used their names in their writings. They always used the name “Nanak” as if everything was written by Guru Nanak Dev ji. This reinforces our belief that all our Gurus had the same spirit in different bodies. The eternal source of spiritual knowledge that was within Guru Nanak Dev ji was passed on to each Guru and they uttered Gurbani that originated from the same source.)

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY
KAHO NANK SACH DHIAEEAE, SUCH HOVAE TA SACH PAEEAE (SGGS-Asa Di Waar)

[Nanak says, meditate on the Divine Name (because) you can realize God only when your inside is (spiritually) clean (goodness cannot reside in an evil heart). ]
